That is a difficult question to answer as records haven’t always been kept of temperatures. However, looking at other data it appears that the earth has been warming since the 1800s due to the industrial revolution. However, this was only a small increase in temperature. It is more recently that the temperature has been increasing quickly and by large amounts.

As Caragh said, we haven’t always kept a record of temperature. However, we can take bits from the bottom of the sea and deep in the ice which tells us what the weather was like when they got there. This means we know what the climate was like hundreds of years ago, it’s really cool!

This means scientists can look at this and see what effect we had. A couple of years ago some scientists discovered that in the 1800s pretty soon after we started burning fossil fuels from the industrial revolution. Although the Earth has warmed up and cooled down a lot over millions of years it has never heated up this much. That’s our fault and we need to try and stop burning fossil fuels as much!
