Anything that leads to the increase in green house gases (CO2, NO2 and methane) causes global warming and the biggest cause of green house gases is the burning of fossil fuels either in our cars and other transport or as coal to produce electricity and heating. The burning of forests and fields also produce a large amount of these gases too but also increase air pollution too.

Caragh is correct, the burning of fossil fuels is the biggest cause of fossil fuels. That is why there is a lot of scientists looking at how we can use other types of energy, like renewable energy, that is much better for the environment.

Thanks to scientists, we are using less fossil fuels than we used to. This year, the amount of energy we get from the sun, wind and sea was more than the energy we got from burning fossil fuels. This is a brilliant step forward, but we need to keep on going and use less and less fossil fuels.
