I live in Durham with friends I made at university and spend most of my time doing my science research. Hiking is really fun and good exercise and I like meeting new friends when out walking, but when it rains we play board games.

I mix sugar to make a very toxic marshmallow containing some metal and heat this to 1000 degrees centigrade to make a ‘graphene’ block, basically a small black lump which can be used in batteries and new things to store energy.
I also make my own computer programs to help us deal with all the data we get and help other people to measure their materials.
-
My Typical Day:
I get up late and slowly make some tea. Then I spend the day making stuff in the lab, measuring things with lots of equipment and writing computer programs.

There isn’t really a truly typical day, when I get into the lab I might spend some time making gooey samples, or measuring things I’ve already made, or doing computer programming to deal with all the data. Often though I also need to help fix equipment, help other students with their experiments. It’s also very important to read about the work other scientists are doing and what they are finding out.

What I'd do with the prize money:
Make some activities to connect people in old mining areas with the science of mining and how we can manage resources in the future.
